The plastic grocery sack/
floating on Utah Lake/
became a death trap/
for the curious/
foraging muskrat./
So why did we laugh?/
What a horrible way/
to die like that,/
drowning
in a grocery sack.

On a cloudy Friday morning
I washed my car.
On a sunny Saturday afternoon
I drove down a muddy road
and went to the beach.
Was it worth it?
Oh yeah!
Most definitely!

I washed my car/

and went to the beach,
down a muddy road,
on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Was it worth it?/
Oh yeah!
Most definitely.
The pain
pulses
through my peds.
I can’t remember
why I stepped/
onto the ice
and snow,
then
into the gently flowing
melted
river.
Was it to prove
that I could do it?
Was it a memory
of polar bear dips past?
Was it a beach,
and I’s just gotsta?
Or was it just/
to experience the shock
of being able/
to feel
again?
Kids playing on a/
winter beach doesn’t sound much/
diff’rent than summer.

The silence /
of my peaceful lakeshore beach walk/
is shattered/
by the roar of their
unmufflered
ATV machine.
Why should I deny them/
their pleasure?/
Because it ain’t natural./
It just ain’t natural.
