Homage To AMMentoring, Still

Upon reading Calming the Wilderness, riffing.

It feels strange to,
at last, again,
peel back the flap of another
large, manilla envelope.

Departure

Decades past,
the first one from her
contained guidance,
wisdom,
and introduction
to an unfamiliar,
yet exciting and welcome,
urban life.

I was brought in,
feted,
playing with the Big D
boys and girls now,
uncertain,
wrapped in a glass and steel
citadel
along a Northwest Expressway,
(long before I settled in a
specific Northwest expressway.)

She, always smiling,
eyes shining,
always kind,
giving wisdom,
guiding me through
the intracacies of even higher
las places I yearned to be.

Voyage

Then, I left.
What a long, strange trip!
Touching base with her
actually rarely,
yet constantly mentally,
as though she were
some reality Ebenezer,
not the man,
but the touch stone.

Return

Now we reconnect,
after our journeys took us
far and away,
and we each escaped
that cold urbanity
(once more, she teaches!),
to find our home,
our rest,
our real core sacred selves.

From the second envelope
slides black and white wisdom
about She who I love
so dearly,
and who she now,
clearly,
loves
and understands
at least as equally
as I.

Thumbing the pages,
gazing at letters, symbols:
A strange feeling
of recognition,
joy,
and gratitude.

The voice is so familiar,
with sense of connection.
My heart!
My soul!
My spirit!
swells,
and tears well
up and out
as I read of
Nature observations
and insights,
and wisdom,
and feelings,
hersyetmine.

Thousands of miles
and dozens of years
apart,
we’re even using
the same words,
receiving the same
inspiration,
talking to messengers
sent from the sky,
forests,
plains,
mountains:
Birds,
plants,
animals,
stars,
water,
wind,
Earth,
Heaven.

I’m curious if she,
as once,
is now again as connected
to Saint Francis
as I am.
All creatures….

I shake my head
in wonder
and amazement.
Such similarites!
I yearn to see
her portal,
Sangre de Cristo
and Land of Enchantment,
and hope to let her
experience ours,
Spirit Tree
and vortex folds
along the Chickamauga.

Thought:
Perhaps,
through words,
we are connecting
and connected.

The Source is the same,
whether in desert,
on mountain or plain,
through creeks and fields,
grasslands, forests,
or places I can’t yet pronounce.

I’m grateful
and moved beyond words
(and yet, here they are!)
for the truths
and her gift(s)
that this manilla envelope
revealed.

God’s Hand In Nature: Haiku Retort

An Instagram post: “She was a fool, and so am I, and so is anyone who thinks he sees what God is Doing, [writes Bokonon]” #Kurtvonnegut #catscradle
My retort:

To see, in Nature,
God’s Hand, is high gratitude*.
To understand? Grace.

OR
*just means you’re grateful.

Connect To Earth Reground Rebound: Free Verse

I trod,
barefoot,
 to connect to Earth,
Feel her energy,
Heal
and be healed.
Then, Western medicine
Told me not to,
So I stopped.
My energy
And mind
And soul
And body
Got confused,
Out of synch,
Out of harmony.
I felt ill.
Now I’m back,
Feet firmly rooted again,
Feeling connected
and at peace.
When God
and Nature
and Mother Earth
speak to you,
Pay attention
And keep going.
Don’t you think
Father and Mother know best?

Daughter’s Micro-Trash Chastisement: Haiku

My daughter ripped me/
about my land’s micro-trash./
Now, pockets are filled.

Backstory: A few years ago, my daughter came to live at our house in NW Georgia. Our objective at Spirit Tree FarmsSpirit Tree Farms is to create a place of peace and healing, where folks can come and connect with Nature, tap into their God-inspired creativity, #FindNatureJoy.

One day, as she and I were walking in the woods and fields, she turned to me and basically called me out, saying something like: “This place is not what you’re trying to have it be. It’s not peaceful. There’s no Zen here.” Taken by surprise, I asked her, honestly, what she meant. She pointed around and said (I’m paraphrasing) :”You come out here and leave plastic bottles and pieces of paper and shreds of plastic bags. You say you’ll clean them up later, but you don’t. You’re trying to partner with the Earth, and have Earth and this land be a healing place, but there’s micro-garbage everywhere. It doesn’t work!”

I looked around and saw that she was right. Ribbons of torn plastic, busted milk jugs once used for watering native plants but now falling apart and useless, plastic bottle caps, pieces of paper, all were interwoven with the very plants, trees, grasses, and wildflowers we were trying to grow! I was not being authentic at all!

Since then, because of her ripping on me, I’ve been much more aware of micro-trash on our land and elsewhere. Does it still exist? Sure! It’s micro-trash, and despite my Boy Scout, nature observation and trash-pick-up training, I do miss things. (And having the neighbor’s dogs and local racoons and birds get into bags and boxes and shread and spread things doesn’t help!) But it’s a lot better than it was.

I used to come back from my nature observation and grounding walks in the woods and fields with bags of micro-trash. Now, it’s rare if I fill up my pockets with litter.

I hope my daughter is proud of my efforts. I’m certainly grateful for her example and chastisement!  In fact, I sent her a text with this haiku, then said:

I’m always thankful every time I pick up a piece of micro-trash in my yard, for your chastisement and vital lesson. Thank you.

A grateful Dad

After all, if we expect Mother Earth to heal us, we have to be partners with her, and help heal her. And we can all, always, do better.

Nature’s Testimony Meetings Haiku

I was discussing if we could really “talk” to the trees, the flowers, rocks, rivers, birds, animals, and all matter of live, if we can really communicate on a spirit-to-spirit basis. Some say that’s silly, that the flora and fauna of God’s creations can’t “talk”. As I was thinking and pondering, I thought several truths:
*Scripture says ALL things testify there is a God / Creator
* Isaiah (Old Testament Bible) talks about the Earth and the mountains and woods and other natural items “SHOUTING” God’s praises
*Other Scripture says that the rocks and stars and more “testify.”

So I thought: “If I can FEEL the testimony and the Spirit in and through Nature, how is that any different than going to a testimony meeting at Church? And I realized … It’s not!  So I wrote:

I can access Earth’s/
testimony meetings when I/
walk in Nature.
